The Japan Program
Peace member Dana
Dutcher, who recently graduated from Valparaiso with a major in
International Business and minors in Urban Studies and Chinese, has felt
the calling to participate in an ELCA Global Mission opportunity that
will take her to Japan for the next 30 months. She departed on Sept.
27 for her term in Japan (see program description below). Please include
Dana and her family in your prayers as she prepares to answer the call
to serve the people of Japan and share her witness about Christ to a
mainly Buddhist country. You can follow Dana’s travels at

The Japan Program (J-3): A Ministry of Teaching and
Congregational Leadership
The Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church (JELC) operates schools and
other programs that provide English language instruction as part of the
church's ministry. The JELC invites the ELCA to recruit English speakers
to teach English and to be actively involved in the life of the local
congregation. J-3 is the program’s moniker in Japan because the length
of service is nearly three years (see timeframe below). The J-3 program
has a long history dating back to the mid-1950s. Many people have found
it to be a great opportunity and an unforgettable, life-changing
experience. A candidate applies to teach in the J-3 program, but the
final determination of placement is made by the JELC after the
teacher-missionary has been in Japan for a few months. The length of the
contract is 33 months, beginning in July of each year.
July-August: U.S. orientation (mandatory).
September: March: Japanese language study and cultural
orientation.
April - March: Teaching/Ministry period of 24 months begins.
Financial Support
Gifts for ELCA
Missionary Support help make a world of difference. Here are examples of
of the good your gifts can do:
$10 - pays for a month's supply of
cooking kerosene
$50 - purchases a pass for public
transportation
$120 - provides two- to 12-months of email access,
depending on
the area.
$200 - covers a month's rent in some areas or a
month's
security
expense in others.
$1,000 - pays for a short-term missionary's stipend and benefits
for one
month.
